News: May 2009
07/05/2009On Friday, the Mayor pledged £3 million to kick-start London's Low Carbon Zones programme and announced the start of an application process through which London boroughs can access this funding over 2009-12. We are asking boroughs to nominate areas of up to 1000 buildings and to sign-up to a carbon saving target for them of 20.12% by 2012, in time for the Olympics. It is our intention to establish up to ten Low Carbon Zones in London as soon as possible and to work closely with applicants to ensure success through this phase of the programme, in developing the zones beyond 2012 and in rolling out the model across all London boroughs. Low Carbon Zones will focus at the community level. We are asking Boroughs applying for support to build a consortium of partners, bringing together energy suppliers, members of the Local Strategic Partnership and local delivery and community partners to deliver enhanced carbon saving and sustainability measures to residents, public sector buildings and local businesses. A prospectus explaining the ambition and content of the programme is available here along with an application form. I encourage your organisation to consider what involvement it may wish to take in a consortium of partners led by a local authority in applying to the Low Carbon Zones programme. The Mayor will bring funding and strategic programme management support, the climate change mitigation programmes provided by the GLA group and is working to leverage private sector sponsorship of the programme. Any questions can be directed to lcz@london.gov.uk. We are also hosting a Low Carbon Zones workshop on 1st June at City Hall and more information on this will be sent out separately.
