New Green500 award winners announced Dec 2009
Arsenal Football Club Gold award
Arsenal Football Club is proud of the achievements made in reducing the impact that the Club has on the environment. Arsenal has worked extremely hard to reduce the CO2 emissions produced at Emirates Stadium, and through numerous initiatives and investment, CO2 emissions have been reduced by 26% since 2007.
Arsenal is aiming to further reduce its carbon footprint with a programme of improvements in the coming year. Arsenal has greatly reduced the amount of waste going to landfill, with the Club’s supporters now actively separating recyclable waste on Matchdays. Together with other initiatives, this has lead to over 80% of waste from Emirates Stadium being diverted from landfill.
The Club will continue to actively pursue ways in how to reduce waste and emissions and also seek renewable energy solutions.

British Library Gold award
The British Library has the responsibility of keeping the national archives in perpetuity for use by present and future generations. The artefacts in storage and on display are national treasures such as the Magna Carta and as such are priceless. Maintaining an environment for the archives is highly energy intensive. An energy opportunities action plan has been developed during Year 1 of COFELY’s contract term which involves lighting upgrades, boiler and hot-water systems upgrades, optimisation of the building operation and electrical voltage optimisation. The next milestone for the British Library will be a LED lighting upgrade for the Kings Tower Library which should be completed by mid-January.

London Midland Silver award
As part of a wider plan to provide greener public transport and to achieve the ISO 14001 standard, London Midland has invested in low energy, fluorescent lighting systems at our maintenance depots, helping to reduce electricity use at depots by 20%. We have also focused on engaging with staff to raise awareness of the importance of energy management, and made additional investment in heating and lighting controls, plus automated energy monitoring across all of our major sites. As a result, electricity use at our largest station, Watford Junction, was reduced by 8% in 2009. Overall, these plans contributed to savings of over £150,000 in 2009.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust Platinum award
Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust has invested £10m to install two combined heat and power (CHP) engines, which will contribute to a 20% reduction in the Trust’s carbon emissions, as well as deliver financial savings of approximately £1.5m per annum.
These 3 MW engines, one at each site, are the largest CHP engines in use in the NHS and provide half of the Trust’s electricity needs and a great deal of the hot water and heating demands. These engines were installed in summer 2009, and were formally launched by Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, on 10 September 2009.

Warren Evans Platinum award
Warren Evans, the award winning bed manufacturer, moved to a sustainable and energy efficient workshop in 2007. Warren Evans only uses Forest Stewardship Council certified wood to make his beds, and he was the first bed manufacturer in the UK to gain this prestigious certification.
Since moving to the new workshop, Warren Evans has reduced water usage by 38%; increased office recycling; reduced disposals; reduced the cost of wood per bed by 6%; and has reduced the amount of lacquer used on each bed, from three coats to two coats.

Wiles Greenworld Diamond award
Wiles Greenworld is an office supplies company proud to have received Diamond status from London Green 500 in recognition of its holistic approach to moving towards sustainability. As well as addressing its own operations, where carbon intensity (sales/emissions) has improved 15% over the last year, it works in partnership with suppliers and customers to reduce carbon through product sourcing and selection and through distribution efficiencies. Comprehensive reporting then allows office supplies to be targeted by customers to assist in reducing their environmental impact. The successful implementation of its innovative approach earned it recognition as one of The Sunday Times Best Green Companies in 2009.
