Why Green500?

Cities are a key focus in fighting the threat of climate change. Worldwide, cities cover less than 1% of the Earth’s surface, but disproportionately account for some 75% of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Current CO2 emissions in London stand at 44 million tonnes (a 2.4% reduction from 1990). It is predicted that a ‘business as usual’ approach would see emissions rise to 51 million tonnes by 2025. The UK Government has committed to CO2 reduction targets, both under the Kyoto Protocol and under their own pledge.

The Mayor of London’s Plan

This commitment was mirrored by the London Mayor’s Energy Strategy which aims for an overall CO2 reduction of 60% by 2025.  Green500 is one of a number of LDA (London Development Agency) initiatives.

Who is Green500 For?

The programme is called Green500 as it is designed to target 500 of the biggest organisations in London.

The primary focus of Green500 scheme is to work with organisations with the greatest carbon saving potential. Therefore it is targeting large businesses and public sector organisations in London. Companies like Marks & Spencer and Chelsea Football Club have already agreed to join.

This is the first phase of Green500, and in the long term the scheme may extend to all organisations. It aims to set a global standard of environmental excellence which will set members apart as bastions of global organisational citizenship.
